Abu Dhabi is the federal capital and center of government in the United Arab Emirates. It is the largest city of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and one of the most modern cities in the world.
With a population of just under 1.5 million, Abu Dhabi is the headquarters of numerous oil companies and embassies. With only 420,000 citizens in the entire emirate, each has an average net worth of $17 million, and Abu Dhabi has been described by CNN as "the richest city in the world". The city features large gardens and parks, green boulevards lining all the streets and roads, sophisticated high–rise buildings, international luxury hotel chains and opulent shopping malls.
Year–round sunshine, pristine beaches, spectacular sand dunes and pulsating cosmopolitan lifestyle await every guest in Abu Dhabi. These, combined with distinctive Arabian hospitality, mystique and world–class infrastructure make Abu Dhabi an enchanting destination for experienced and novice travellers.
The emirate hosts the United Arab Emirates' capital Abu Dhabi city. This island capital is characterised by its signature Corniche, which fronts the amazing turquoise waters of the Arabian Gulf. You can stroll, cycle, roller–blade or drive the Corniche for a journey to the tip where the majestic Emirates Palace one of the world's most opulent hotels sits on 1.3 kilometres of pristine beach.
In Abu Dhabi city you'll find all the conveniences of 21st century capital living and with some surprising additions. Don't forget to take a complimentary guided tour of the awe–inspiring Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque one of the world's largest and you can book into one of its many beach resorts. Fine dining abounds, as do opportunities for more affordable fare in numerous city centre outlets. Shopping is as diverse as the emirate there's everything from marble–clad malls with haute couture brands to a textile souk (market) tucked away behind the main Hamdan Centre and a carpet souk at the Mina (Port). Whatever you choose to do, you will meet with a welcome which has been extended to travellers throughout the ages.

Shopping is something of a national pastime in Abu Dhabi, perhaps because it's so diverse everything from ultra–modern malls with the latest brands, to small, souk–like outlets where you can buy traditional perfumes, handicrafts, spices and carpets. You can spend thousands of dollars on a bejewelled designer watch, or pick up a basic timepiece in a supermarket. You can splash out on an haute–couture designer outfit or buy fabric and have a local tailor make up your very own creation for a bargain price. You can buy a treasured Arabian antique, or a technology–busting super–modern home entertainment system. Prices are often excellent in comparison to those abroad, especially for carpets, textiles and gold. If you are a good bargainer, you can get even better deals. Shops open at around 10am – 10pm or later on weekends. Although most malls work straight through, some independent shops close for an extended lunch break, usually from 1pm – 4pm. Hours usually change during Ramadan and Eid, with many shops closing for the afternoon and reopening from 7pm until midnight or later.
Notwithstanding its cosmopolitan, multicultural nature and business orientation, Abu Dhabi city retains much of the quiet charm that characterizes a typical Arabic city at night. Nightlife in Abu Dhabi can be as quiet and refreshing as a stroll by the corniche or in a park in the cooler seasons or as active as watching a rock band performance in a pub or dancing in a night club in one of Abu Dhabi's five or four–star hotels. Between the two extremes nightlife in Abu Dhabi has much to offer to all age groups, tastes and interests families and single visitors alike. An evening out can be a culinary treat from a wide range of oriental and international cuisines, a cultural event such as a play, a lecture, a concert or an art exhibition, or it can simply be a show at a movie theatre or an evening at gaming centre or an Arabic coffee shop where the traditional shisha (hookah or hubbly–bubbly) is served. Shopping malls, which remain open till 22:00 or 23:00, are a main attraction for many of Abu Dhabi residents and visitors, not only for the rich shopping experience or the equally exciting window–shopping but for the variety of outlets and services found in these malls.
