Hungary is a country in Central Europe. Member of the European Union and the Schengen Border–less Europe Agreement. The country offers many diverse destinations: relatively low mountains in the north–west, the Great Plain in the east, lakes and rivers of all sorts (including Balaton – the largest lake in Central Europe), and many beautiful small villages and hidden gems of cities. Top this off with Hungary's great accessibility in the middle of Europe, a vivid culture and economy, and you get a destination absolutely not worth missing if you're in the region.
Hungary is one of the 15 most popular tourist destinations in the world, with a capital regarded as one of the most beautiful in the world ]. Despite its relatively small size, the country is home to numerous World Heritage Sites, UNESCO Biosphere reserves, the second largest thermal lake in the world (Lake Hvz), the largest lake in Central Europe (Lake Balaton), and the largest natural grassland in Europe (Hortobgy). In terms of buildings, Hungary is home to the largest synagogue in Europe (Great Synagogue), the largest medicinal bath in Europe (Szchenyi Medicinal Bath), the third largest church in Europe (Esztergom Basilica), the second largest territorial abbey in the world (Pannonhalma Archabbey), the second largest Baroque castle in the world (Gdllo), and the largest Early Christian Necropolis outside Italy (Pcs).
Budapest is packed with museums and galleries, and there are plenty of temporary exhibitions in the most unlikely of settings, particularly in summer – so keep your eyes peeled. Also note that most museums are closed on Mondays.
Visit Castle Hill – home to what you might call Buda's 'old town' – has been a cultural and strategic focal point of the city for centuries and was also the site of over 30 sieges. The inevitable damage resulted in several episodes of rebuilding, often re–using stones from the rubble and lending to the district a fascinating mix of architectural styles. The showpieces are the spectacular Mtys Church and the Buda Royal Palace to the south. In addition, the views over Pest from the Fishermen's Bastion will take your breath away.
Visit– Buda Royal Palace. The enormous building at the southern end of Castle Hill has been the royal palace, in various styles and guises, since the 14th century. It was rebuilt 400 years later and required major reconstruction work after World War II. It now houses the Budapest History Museum, the Hungarian National Gallery and the National Szchenyi Library
Alongside the opera, operetta, concert halls, musical theatres, churches and the Aggtelek Stalactite Cave, part of the world heritage, the recently opened Arts Palace also guarantees that Hungary is one of the defining centres of European music life.
Relax– Thermal waters abound in Hungary with over 1000 thermal springs in the country many of which have been turned into baths and spas. The most famous being the Szechenyi baths in Budapest. There are, however, hundreds of individual baths all around the country. The cave baths at Miskolc–Tapolca and the spa at Egerszalk are some nice examples.
Hungary is incredibly diverse, with a variety of landscapes and cultural attractions that are often better discovered by alternative means of transport, on horseback, by bicycle, on foot or by canoe – or perhaps a round of golf. And the great thing about these holidays is that they afford you complete flexibility – the journey is the destination.
Thousands of people visit the Hungarian Design Market, the WAMP every month, to find unique, high quality design products from Hungarian designers.
