Snow sure skiing up to 3300 metres
One of France's largest resorts, Alpe d'Huez can appeal to most levels of skier and snowboarder. Nearly 100 lifts spread out around the mountain above, opening up one of the world's largest lift–served skiable verticals of more than 2,200m.
Although the main resort is largely purpose built, Alpe d'Huez dates back to 1936. The original old village of Huez is 400m below the resort and can be accessed by a high speed gondola.
Being southerly and south facing, Alpe d'Huez makes the most of the available sunshine. However, thanks to it's high altitude lifts, skiing is virtually guaranteed, even in a poor snow season, as the local Sarenne glacier was formerly open for summer skiing. There are spectacular views from the highest lift where, on a clear day, you can see Mont Blanc, Italy and an area that has been calculated to cover one fifth of France.
With over 300 shops Alpe d'Huez is a large resort offering all the facilities you could want. There's also a wide range of activities available with many included free of charge or at a discounted rate using the Visalp lift pass. These include a swimming pool, ice rink, curling, sports centre with 26 different activities, sledging, 30km of hiking trails, 50km of cross–country skiing, snowshoeing, a weekly classical music concert, museum and an ice cave located at 2,700m. For thrill seekers you can also try ice driving, diving under the ice in the frozen Besson lake or a panoramic flight in a light aircraft.
Alpe d'Huez is a lively resort compared to many French ski centres that can be quiet once the lifts close. With apprxoimately 70 restaurants and 30 bars you have plenty of choice for where to spend your evenings. Popular choices include the Igloo and The Underground. Along with a wide choice of French and Alpine restaurants you will also find several Italian and Mexican options.
