Sweden Travel Guide

Sweden officially the Kingdom of Swedenis a Nordic country on the Scandinavian Peninsula in Northern Europe. Sweden borders with Norway and Finland and is connected to Denmark by a bridge–tunnel across the resund.

Sweden is the perfect destination for families who want to get away for a real family holiday. Swedish society and the lifestyle of socializing with children outside the home mean that wherever you want to go in Sweden, children are welcome.

Perhaps Swedens greatest export is its culture and its modernity. Swedish design, music, art and literature are admired the world over. That Sweden punches way above its weight, historically and in modern times, in terms of the impact of its culture around the globe is without doubt.

This is a very child–friendly country and the entire family can discover Sweden together. The castles, summer and winter resorts, theme parks, zoos and outdoor activities in Sweden all cater to the interests and needs of the whole family.A family vacation in Sweden is a joyously relaxing, low–key affair with activities for the whole family; skiing, cycling, berry picking, swimming in crystal–clear lakes, horse riding, canoeing and more.

The cities of Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malm offer very different flavours of one nation. You have the cool of Stockholm, the maritime atmosphere of Gothenburg, Swedens second largest city and the multi–cultural aspect of Malm. What they all share is an abundance of parks, museums, interesting sites to visit and vibrant cultures. Just about anything you would want to do or see in any one of the three is within walking distance. What they also have in common is forests, sandy beaches, crystal clear lakes and rich flora and fauna. Smack, bang in the middle of town. Getting back to nature in all three is as easy as a walk in the park of which there are many.

Things to do

Starting in southern Sweden we have Skne Zoo with more than 700 Nordic wild animals. More than 85 different species are on show in a beautiful Skne country setting, along with a petting zoo, playground etc. Towards the West Coast you can stop at Bors Zoo before arriving in Gothenburg and Scandinavia's largest amusement park Liseberg. It has more than 30 exciting rides and other attractions – gentle ones for the smallest children and tough challenges for their young and Stockholm gives us a real feast for children with sights like Skansen, the world's oldest open–air museum, where you will discover the Sweden of yesteryear and see Nordic animals like elk, bears and wolves. Not far from Skansen is Junibacken, a fairytale house full of fun and laughter where you'll meet some of the characters from Astrid Lindgren's well–known children's books. Only a stone's throw away is the Vasa Museum, the home of the majestic warship built in 1628, and Grna Lund amusement park has lots of attractions for evereyone.

Culture

You can discover that Sweden was a major power in Europe in the 17th century by visiting the many beautifully castles, palaces and manor houses from the period? Or that 3,000 years ago the people of Tanum, now a World Heritage site, carved depictions of their lives and customs onto rocks, perhaps so that we would discover them.

Worth checking out is the amazing Vasa Museum in Stockholm which is a museum built around the Vasa Ship; the worlds only surviving 17th century battleship which sunk on its maiden voyage in Stockholm. The museum building, the presentation of the ship and its artefacts have to be seen to be believed unmissable.

The Mine Museum in Falun, central Sweden, is a UNESCO World Heritage site, an honour it shares with the town of Falun and homesteader estates. It sits on the edge of the Great Pit, the site of a giant cave–in in 1687. The museum tells the story of the mine and the company that ran it and it has received the highest ranking from the Michelin Guide. And they should know.

Kalmar Castle in eastern Sweden, sits on a headland jutting out into Kalmar Strait . It dates from the 14th century and was rebuilt in the 16th century. The castle was built around a harbour and soon became The Key to the Kingdom and a significant defensive fortification on the then Danish border. Nearby lies the landbron a bridge that takes to island of land, as famous for its sunny micro–climate, as it is for being holiday destination for Swedes and for its unique flora and fauna. It is also famous for its amazingly well preserved pre–Viking and Viking historical sites.

Active

Depending on which time of year you come to Sweden think outdoor activities. In wintertime, Sweden is a haven for winter sports such as skiing, skating and ice climbing. While in spring and summertime you can enjoy trekking, mountaineering, white–water rafting, canoeing, sailing and many other adrenaline–filled pursuits.
