Greek Island Discovery Cruise aboard Quest for Adventure
1 Venice, Italy
Located on the north-western side of the Adriatic, you moor in the enchanting city of Venice, famed for its romantic gondolas, Renaissance palaces and baroque churches. The city itself lies on an archipelago in a shallow, crescent-shaped lagoon and features some 160 canals crossed by over 450 bridges.
Immerse yourself in the lively, bustling atmosphere and go in search of its outstanding churches including the elaborate Basilica di San Marco, the beautiful Campanile di San Marco which offers spectacular panoramic views across the city, and San Giovanni in Bragora where the composer Vivaldi was once the organist.
There is also a wonderful choice of museums and galleries, from Accademia, Venice’s greatest art gallery, to the Naval Museum which displays Italy’s best collection of maritime artifacts and memorabilia. Famous landmarks of this great city are innumerable, but perhaps the best known is St Mark’s Square and elegant Rialto Bridge.
2 Dubrovnik, Croatia
One of the most prominent tourist destinations on the Adriatic, Dubrovnik was founded by the Romans in the 7th century, when it was known as Ragusium. Back then it was the most important independent city state on the Adriatic after Venice.
Despite a devastating earthquake in the 17th century, most of the city’s Gothic, baroque and Renaissance churches and palaces survived. Damaged again in the 1990s by armed conflict, it is now the focus of a major restoration programme co-ordinated by UNESCO. With a distinct medieval character, the iconic red roofs of the old city are scattered across many cultural treasures, all ensconced within ancient city walls.
With marble-paved squares, fountains and magnificent buildings, this World Heritage Site is a pleasure to explore.
3 Kotor, Montenegro
Don’t miss the stunning views this morning as you cruise through the Bay of Kotor, the largest natural fjord outside of Norway.
You will then have the day to explore the medieval town of Kotor, which is surrounded by massive city walls and dotted with Romanesque churches and monuments.
4 Sarande
Sarande lies on the southern Adriatic coast, opposite the Greek island of Corfu. Albania’s most famous seaside resort and southern gateway, Sarande is known as the ‘Pearl of Albania’ sitting as it does in a blue gulf of open sea. Graced with a favourable climate and with a variety of fragrant, colourful flora which blooms along the white sand beaches, it has an idyllic setting. Due to its location and warm sea, Sarande is said to lie along the Albanian Riviera. Mosaics confirm that it was settled between the second and third centuries AD, although this is predated by a mention from the Roman orator and statesman, Cicero, who described it as a “convenient harbour with favourable winds”. In order to get the best experience from this port, we recommend you take a tour, as the main highlights are located some distance away from the port.
5 Igoumenitsa Greece
Igoumenitsa is a small town surrounded by imposing pine-covered mountains and pretty beaches. A busy, vibrant port, you’ll find plenty of shops and a new archaeology museum here.
6 Argostoli Kefalonia Greece
The small city of Argostoli may have a long history but extensive rebuilding after World II and an earthquake shortly afterwards has given it a modern appearance. One building that did escape destruction was St George Castle, which you might like to visit.
7 Pylos Greece
Pretty Pylos greets you at the end of a beautiful bay and invites you to explore the alleys and side streets that lace the hillside. In addition, there’s a fortress as well as the nearby natural beauty of the Gialova wetland, which attracts an array of birdlife.
8 Gytheion Greece
Nestled beneath the Taygetos mountains, Gytheion is a petite harbour town that clings to the traditional Greek way of life. Atmospheric narrow streets of pastel-coloured houses, colourful fishing boats and an attractive seaside promenade all form part of its idyllic charm. Perhaps seize the opportunity to spend a relaxing day on the beach, or you could visit the Byzantine citadel of Mystras.
9 Ermoupolis
Syros is part of the Cyclades archipelago, a group of Greek islands in the Aegean Sea. Enjoy a leisurely day here, strolling the narrow streets or just relaxing on one of its many stunning beaches. Or you might want to visit Ano Synos, a delightful medieval town.
10 Chios Town Chios Greece
This little crescent shaped island features many medieval villages, a castle and an archaeological museum crammed with artefacts. For a relaxing afternoon, why not unwind on Vrondados beach, or take a trip to the Nea Moni Monastery.
11 Myrina Lemnos Greece
Myrina, the capital of Lemnos, stretches around a picturesque bay. Perhaps walk past the traditional Thracian homes up to the Venetian castle – and enjoy great views of the island from the top – or maybe journey inland to discover some of the unspoilt towns and villages scattered across the island.
12 Kavala Greece
Kavala has many architectural treasures including a 16th-century aqueduct and a Byzantine castle. Perhaps pay a visit to the Archaeological Museum, or go in search of the Roman ruins of Philippi – the site of Europe’s first Christian church.
13 Istanbul, Turkey
The legendary city of Constantinople, now known as Istanbul, was originally named after Emperor Constantine when the Romans made it their eastern capital in 324AD. A city has stood here for almost three millennia, ruled by various empires from the Greeks to the Ottomans.
Blessed with a magnificent natural setting on the Bosphorous Strait and encompassing a fabulous natural harbour known as the ‘Golden Horn’, Istanbul has long been a draw for travellers. Today, Turkey’s largest metropolis is a melting pot of cultures and is the only city in the world to straddle two continents – Europe and Asia.
It offers a dazzling wealth of culture and traditions, a rich variety of architecture and an intriguing blend of ancient and modern.
