Prague and Delights of the Danube
Day 1 London – Prague
Titan’s VIP Home Departure Service® transports you from your front door to London Heathrow Airport and your direct, scheduled British Airways flight to Prague. On arrival, we transfer to your well appointed hotel in Prague, where we enjoy dinner this evening.
Day 2 Prague
Prague has a rich cultural tradition going back centuries where Haydn, Beethoven, Liszt and Mozart all spent time, and it was here that Figaro was first acclaimed and Don Giovanni received its first performance. Our walking tour this morning will surely confirm that Prague is one of Europe’s most attractive capitals. The afternoon is at leisure for further sightseeing and shopping and for dinner this evening, you are spoilt for choice, with many restaurants nearby.
Day 3 Prague, Passau
After a leisurely morning, we depart by coach to the beautiful Bavarian city of Passau, where we embark the luxurious River Beatrice, moored on the Danube and our home for the next seven nights.
Day 4 Passau
Passau is situated at the confluence of three rivers – the Danube, the Inn and the Ilz. Take a guided walking tour through the cobblestone streets of this historic town, once a Celtic settlement and later an important city of the Holy Roman Empire, and visit St Stephan’s Cathedral, which houses the world’s largest church organ for a concert. You can watch local artists at work in their workshops or visit some of the many art galleries and museums, before perhaps enjoying a drink in one of the attractive beer-gardens. Captains Welcome Dinner tonight.
Day 5 Linz (Salzburg or Steyr)
The city of Linz boasts many historic buildings and is a pleasure to explore on foot. You may wish to wander at your own pace today, viewing the old castle, St Martin’s Church, the 13th century main square, ‘Hauptplatz’, and perhaps enjoy a drink in one of the attractive caf’s. Alternatively, an included excursion is offered to Salzburg, birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, to sample this beautiful city’s Alpine scenery and architectural richness (Please note: lunch is not included on this excursion). Overnight sailing.
Day 6 Melk, Durnstein
Melk is home to a 900 year-old abbey situated high above the granite cliffs of the Danube, one of the most splendid examples of Baroque architecture in Europe. After breakfast, you may choose to join the included trip to this famous religious centre. Later today, we sail on through the stunning scenery of the Wachau Valley, to arrive in the tiny Baroque village of Durnstein, famous for its fine white wines and apricots. The ruins of Kuenringer Castle where Richard the Lionheart was reputedly held prisoner, dominate Durnstein. Here you will have leisure time to stroll along the towpath to the medieval streets, which reveal old burgher houses, wine taverns and quaint 16th and 18th century townhouses. Alternatively you can board the mini train for an included wine tasting at the Domain Wachau.
Day 7 Vienna
We arrive in Vienna, the beautiful, cultured capital of Austria, with its numerous famous sights, including the lavish terraced gardens of Prince Eugene’s Belvedere Palace, the State Opera and the Hofburg residence of Emperor Franz Joseph. Your included city tour this morning visits the National Library and the stately Ringstrasse, a broad thoroughfare lined with imperial buildings and monuments. We overnight in Vienna. Alternatively, you may wish to try an intimate walking tour of Vienna’s historic centre, travelling by foot and subway.
Day 8 Vienna, Cruising the Danube
This morning you can make your own explorations of Vienna or join an optional excursion to visit Schonbrunn, the Baroque palace and former summer residence of the Habsburg family. This afternoon, you can choose to either enjoy a leisurely cruise or join an optional excursion by coach to Bratislava, the attractive capital of Slovakia.
Day 9 Budapest
Make your way up on deck early this morning as we sail into the heart of the Hungarian capital, one of the most beautiful cities of Europe. Budapest is divided by the Danube, with the ancient Buda, the hills, on the right bank, connected by seven bridges to the more modern Pest, the flat lands, on the left bank. We depart this morning for our first experience of this enchanting city with a coach tour of all the main sights – Heroe’s Square, Millennial Monument, the Great Synagogue, St Stephen’s Basilica, St Matthias Church and Fisherman’s Bastion. Alternatively, you can choose to join a walking tour discovery of the city, including a visit to the Hungarian Parliament. Captain’s Farewell Dinner tonight.
Day 10 Budapest, London
We disembark and transfer to the airport for our return direct British Airways flight to London Heathrow Airport. On arrival, our staff will greet you and transfer you to Titan transport for your journey home to your own front door.
