Day 2 Kuala Lumpur, Malacca
This morning we arrive into Kuala Lumpur and transfer south to Malacca, rich in colonial heritage, with exotic flavours of the Orient. Our base for the next two nights is the Equatorial Hotel, and following time to check-in and freshen up we commence a tour of the city which highlights the Portuguese, Dutch and British Colonial past, including a visit to the ruins of the A’Famosa fortress, built by the Portuguese, which held out attackers for over 100 years until 1641, following a lengthy siege by the Dutch. The Dutch then held Malacca for over 150 years before conceding it to the British. The distinctly Dutch main square houses many important buildings including the Stadthuys, which has stood for over three and a half centuries.Later, we cross the Malacca River bridge and stroll the streets of Old Malacca, before embarking on a short cruise to view the colonial architecture from the water. Our final stop is at the Baba Nyonya House museum, where we take a guided tour of a typical Peranakan House. Your evening is at leisure.
Day 3 Malacca
This morning our touring concentrates on the Oriental colonies and influences, starting at the Cheng Hoon Teng Chinese temple, the oldest in Malaysia, adorned with intricate carvings and decoration. We continue to the Kampung Kling Mosque and onward to Bukit Cina, owned by Malacca’s Chinese community, where over 12,000 graves, some dating back to the Ming dynasty, are located. The remainder of the day is left free for you to make your own explorations of this glorious city.
Day 4 Malacca, Kuala Lumpur
This morning we return to Kuala Lumpur and commence a tour of Malaysia’s surprisingly contemporary capital, whose name is often abbreviated to just ‘KL’. We start with a drive through the Lake Gardens, a popular location for local families, and make stops at the National Mosque and at Independence Square, where, in August 1957, the Union Jack was symbolically replaced with the flag of the Federation of Malaya. We then walk to Masjid Jamek, located at the convergence of the Gombak and Klang Rivers, and onwards to the Central Market, an area whose Art Deco architecture has been fortunately conserved. Later we experience Chinatown, before transferring to the ‘New Village’; Kampung Baru, where the houses display typical Malay architecture. Our tour is concluded with a fabulous photo opportunity of the Petronas Twin Towers, once the tallest buildings in the world. We stay for two nights at the Renaissance Hotel.
Day 5 -6 Kuala Lumpur
Two days at leisure to explore ‘The City of Lights’ and its many shopping opportunities. On one evening we have included a walking tour through the vibrant market areas, which come alive at night, before continuing to a local restaurant to enjoy a traditional Malay dinner and cultural show.
Day 7 Kuala Lumpur – Cameron Highlands
We leave the capital this morning, visiting the natural limestone Batu Caves, the largest and most important Hindu temple in Malaysia, with 272 steps leading up to the Temple Cave. We continue our journey taking the winding uphill ascent into the Cameron Highlands, discovered by the government surveyor William Cameron in 1885. This hill resort lies over 6,000 feet above sea level and was used by the British during their colonial rule. Our hotel for a two night stay is the Strawberry Park Resort, situated in delightful surroundings.
Day 8 Cameron Highlands
Today we make our explorations of the lush rolling hills and terraced plantations of the Cameron Highlands. During the day we will visit not only a tea plantation, but also a small village of the Orang Asli, the original tribal population of Peninsula Malaysia. Later, following an included lunch, we explore a local market, honey farm and butterfly garden. This evening you are at leisure to enjoy your surroundings.
Day 9 Cameron Highlands – Penang
This morning we leave the Cameron Highlands and travel to Kuala Kangsar, the royal capital of the Perak region. We view the stunning golden domes and minarets of the Ubudiah Mosque and pass the Royal Palace, home of the Sultan of Perak. Lunch is included today. Later we head to an orang-utan research centre, which cares for, and prepares for the eventual release of, injured, displaced and domesticated orang-utans. After our fascinating visit we cross one of the longest bridges in Asia to arrive on perhaps Malaysia’s most enthralling island, rich in colonial architecture. Penang, known locally as Pulau Pinang, is a paradise of palms, beaches and tropical sunshine. Our base for the next four nights is the Holiday Inn.
Day 10 Penang
Today we have included a comprehensive tour of Penang Island, starting in the state capital, historic Georgetown, named by the British after King George III. Our tour includes a stop at Fort Cornwallis where Captain Francis Light, the founder of the British settlement in Penang, is said to have fired a cannon full of silver dollars into thick jungle, to incentivise the clearing of this land, an expensive ploy that by all accounts worked very well. As well as the fort, we take time to admire the colonial architecture of the surrounding buildings. We also stop at the Wat Chayamangkalaram, which houses the 100-foot long gold-plated reclining Buddha, and the Dharmmikarama Burmese Buddhist Temple. Later, we continue to view Khoo Kongsi, a beautiful Chinese clan house and Kek Lok Si Temple, where a large statue dedicated to the Goddess of Mercy dominates the scene. In the afternoon we visit a local batik factory, a butterfly garden where you will encounter a rare collection of these species, and the botanical gardens. Lunch is included today at a local restaurant.
Day 11 – 12 Penang
Two full free days to stretch out and relax on the beach and take a dip in the sea. Your hotel is the perfect resort for relaxation with an enticing pool surrounded by lush tropical greenery. On day 11 you may wish to take an optional excursion back to the mainland in order to explore the Bujang Valley Archaeological Park and Museum, famed for its examples of Hindu and Buddhist stupas and temples dating from the 3rd to 13th century.
